Female Athletes

Urinary incontinence can affect women of all ages, including athletes in their teens and twenties. High-impact sports and activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure can place extra strain on the pelvic floor, raising the risk of leakage. Research shows that female athletes are up to three times more likely to experience urinary incontinence than non-athletes.

Sports that may carry a higher risk include:

  • Gymnastics

  • Dance

  • Weightlifting

  • Cheerleading

  • Track and field

Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can also influence muscle coordination, energy levels, and recovery, further contributing to pelvic floor dysfunction.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Urinary urgency or frequency

  • Urinary leakage

  • Bowel leakage or loss of gas control

  • Painful intercourse

  • Pain with tampon insertion or gynecological exams
