Female Athletes

Leaking during a lift, a run, or a jump is common in female athletes, but that doesn't mean it's something you should just push through. Athletes in their teens, twenties, and beyond can experience pelvic floor symptoms that have nothing to do with pregnancy or aging.

High-impact sports, heavy lifting, and activities that increase pressure in your abdomen can place real demand on your pelvic floor. Gymnastics, dance, weightlifting, cheerleading, track and field, running, and CrossFit are some of the sports where we see this most often. Hormonal changes throughout your menstrual cycle can also play a role in how your muscles coordinate and recover.

You might be dealing with leaking during your sport, urgency that disrupts training, bowel issues, pain during sex, or discomfort with tampon use or gynecological exams. These are all signs that your pelvic floor isn't working the way it should, and they're all things we can help with.

Being an athlete means you already understand your body and how to work at it. That same mindset applies here. We'll look at how your whole body is moving and coordinating, not just your pelvic floor, and build a plan that gets you back to training with confidence.

Sakura Pelvic Health is located in St. Paul and works with athletes from across the Twin Cities, including Minneapolis, Roseville, Eagan, Mendota Heights, Edina, and surrounding areas. If you're ready to stop working around your symptoms and start actually addressing them, we'd love to help.
